8740 chromium molybdenum is seen as a good tough steel, with sufficient fatigue properties for most racing applications, but only if the wires are rolled after heat treatment, as is standard ARP manufacturing practice. Normally, chromium molybdenum is classified as a quenched and tempered steel, which can be heat treated to provide tensile strengths between 180,000 and 210,000 psi.
