Camshaft position sensor: service and repair
REMOVAL
8.3 L-REPLACED WITH NEW SENSOR
The camshaft position sensor is located on the timing chain box above the water pump and below the throttle body. Use this procedure as a new replacement
camshaft position sensor must be installed.
1. Disconnect the sensor wiring harness connector from the sensor.
2. Remove the sensor mounting bolt.
3. Using two small screwdrivers, gently pry the sensor from the timing chain box/cover with a rocking motion.
4. Remove the sensor from the vehicle.
8.3 L-OLD SENSOR REPLACED WITH ORIGINAL
The camshaft position sensor is located on the timing chain box above the water pump and below the throttle body.
Use this procedure if the original camshaft position sensor needs to be removed and installed, such as when servicing the timing chain, timing gears, or timing chain cover .
1. Disconnect the sensor wiring harness connector from the sensor.
2. Enroll the sensor for location depth.
3. Remove the sensor mounting bolt.
4. Using two small screwdrivers, gently pry the sensor from the timing chain box/cover with a rocking motion.
5. Remove the sensor from the vehicle.
6. Check the condition of the O-ring of the sensor.
INSTALLATION
8.3 L INSTALLATION-WITH NEW SENSOR
The camshaft position sensor is located on the timing chain box above the water pump and below the throttle body.
1. Apply a small amount of engine oil to the O-ring of the sensor.
A low (step down) and high (step up) area are machined into the camshaft sprocket. The sensor is placed in the cover of the timing gear in such a way that there is a small air gap
exists between the surface of the sensor and the highly machined area of the cam gear.
Before installing the sensor, the cam wheel may need to be turned. This is to ensure that the high machined area (step up) on the Sprocket is directly in front of the
opening of the sensor mounting hole located on the timing gear cover.
Do not install the sensor with the gear set low. When starting the engine, the sensor is broken.
2. Using a 1/2 inch wide metal ruler, measure the distance from the camshaft gear to the front of the sensor mounting hole on the timing gear cover.
3. If the size is about 1-15 / 32 inches or less, it is OK to install the sensor.
4. If the size is about 1-5 / 8 inches or more, the camshaft must be turned.
5. Attach a cap to the vibration damper mounting bolt and rotate the motor until the size from 1-15 / 32 inches has been achieved.
6. Mount the sensor in the distribution housing/cover with a slightly rocking motion. Do not rotate the sensor into place as this may damage the O-ring.
Push the sensor all the way into the cover until the rib material on the sensor contacts the camshaft gear.
7. Assemble the mounting bolt and tighten it with a torque of 10.7 Nm (95 in.lbs.) .
8. Connect the sensor wiring harness to the motor wiring harness.
When the engine is started, the rib material is pushed off the surface of the sensor. This will automatically adjust the air gap of the sensor.
8.3 L-OLD SENSOR REPLACED WITH ORIGINAL
The camshaft position sensor is located on the timing chain box above the water pump and below the throttle body.
When installing a used camshaft position sensor, the sensor depth must be adjusted to avoid contact with the camshaft gear (Sprocket).
1. Apply a small amount of engine oil to the O-ring of the sensor.
In the drive gear of the camshaft, a low and high section is machined. The sensor is placed in the cover of the timing gear in such a way that there is a small air gap between
the surface of the sensor and the highly machined area of the cam gear.
