What is an intake manifold gasket-

The intake manifold gasket is designed to seal the intake manifold with the engine cylinder head(s) and ensures that the engine gets the right mix of air and fuel to the cylinders. The gaskets can also seal refrigerant passages from the manifold to the head(s). With patented molded rubber over an aluminized steel support that can withstand high temperatures, application-specific Fel-Pro PermaDryPlus intake manifold gaskets are easier to install with locating tabs to ensure proper alignment and include torque limiters to prevent over-tightening, gasket splitting and extrusion.

Symptoms of a bad intake manifold gasket

With repeated exposure to heat cycles, dirt and debris, and poor maintenance of the cooling system, the intake manifold gasket can become brittle and crack, leading to defective gaskets. Symptoms of a faulty intake manifold gasket include:

  • Rough running / engine failure
  • White smoke from the exhaust
  • Coolant loss resulting in engine overheating
  • Loss of coolant in the engine oil system can lead to contamination of the engine oil
  • Green, red, yellow or blue leaks under the vehicle
  • A sweet smell from under the hood with no visible signs of leakage to the ground

Why do intake manifold gaskets stop working-

Heat and aging are the enemies of the intake manifold gasket. If the engine overheats, the extra heat can stress the gaskets, compressing them too much and the gasket material may not recover to provide an adequate seal. In addition, as with many parts of your vehicle, the normal wear and tear of daily driving can cause the intake manifold gasket to fail. In some cases, the engine castings may be made of different materials with different expansion rates that scrub the gaskets. In the Auto Repair Shop, technicians use a smoke machine to test for leaky intake manifold gaskets at the intake manifold guides. An engine check light with lean engine codes and / or engine failure codes are other signs of a faulty intake gasket.
